Elected Officials
Treasurer Sherry Dyess (R)
Montezuma County Treasurer
Sherry Dyess began working in the Treasurer’s office in 1997, when she was the Chief Deputy Public Trustee, a job she held until 2006. At that time, she ran for and was elected County Treasurer. She enjoys her job, and she enjoys the opportunities she has to talk with the people of Montezuma County. Her co-workers wonder if there is anyone in Montezuma County that she does not know.
Prior to working in the Treasurer’s office, Sherry worked for a number of local businesses, including banks and doctor’s offices, usually in the capacity as bookkeeper. She also did some tax preparation and so almost always found herself working with figures, something she says she is quite comfortable doing. An exception to this was when she worked as a police dispatcher, though that job, too, deals with a lot of numbers.
As Treasurer, Sherry’s responsibilities include what we all recognize as a Treasurer’s main duty: collecting taxes. But her job goes much further than just taxes. She is also responsible for the distribution and tracking of funds for all county departments, preparing reports for the county commissioners, distributing tax monies to the local taxing authorities, and she also handles the distribution of certain state funds to county departments. All of her activities are statute-driven, and she said it took her a while to learn all the regulations that are a daily part of her job.
Originally from Monticello, Utah, Sherry moved to Cortez with her family when she was in the 6th grade. Her family moved a few more times after that, with Sherry graduating from high school in Fort Morgan. She moved back to Cortez in 1965. She is married with three sons, one of whom resides locally.
