Congressman Scott Tipton (R)

US Congressman, Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District

Congressman Scott TiptonCongressman Scott Tipton was born and raised in Cortez, Colorado. He graduated from high school in Cortez and went on to Ft. Lewis College in Durango, where he studied Political Science and became the first person in his family to graduate from college.

After College, he returned home to Cortez and co-founded Mesa Verde Indian Pottery with his brother Joe. Because of a business philosophy that puts people quality and customer service first, Mesa Verde Indian Pottery has developed a reputation worldwide for their craftsmanship and integrity.

It was through his business that Scott met his wife of 26 years, Jean, who is now a retired school teacher. The Tipton’s have two daughters, Liesl and Elizabeth.

A lifelong Republican, Scott got involved with the Ronald Reagan for President Campaign in 1976 and served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention. His commitment to Reagan continued and he played major roles in both the 1980 and 1984 Reagan campaigns in Western Colorado. Scott also served as the Republican Chairman of the Third Congressional District for eight years.

Scott was elected as a Republican to the Colorado House of Representatives for the 58th District in November of 2008.

During his time at the state House, he worked to ensure quality water for the people of Colorado and to improve the air quality of Southwest Colorado. He also sponsored legislation to protect children from the worst criminal offenders by mandating harsher penalties for child sex-offenders and allowing law enforcement to collect DNA evidence from suspects through Jessica’s Law and Katie’s Law.

In 2009, Scott grew more and more concerned with Washington’s reckless spending as he watched the effect Washington’s policies have had on the lives and livelihoods of his fellow Coloradans, and decided to run for Congress. Running on a pro-jobs message, he defeated the incumbent Democrat.

As a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Scott has vowed to bring Colorado common sense Washington—focusing on reforming regulation, cutting government spending and removing hurdles so that small business can do what it does best—create jobs.
