Clerk and Recorder Carol Tullis (R)

Montezuma County Clerk and Recorder

Clerk and Recorder Carol TullisCarol Tullis is currently serving as Montezuma County Clerk and Recorder. She has been involved in the Clerk’s office since her mom worked there as Chief Deputy when Carol was a young woman – she got her start helping her mother with filing. Carol officially began working in the Clerk’s office part-time in 1975 while she was raising her children and went to work full-time in 1985. In 2002, she was elected to her current position.

Carol enjoys her job, though she says it can be challenging, especially with the changes the office has gone through. She has seen the county elections system move from hand-counted ballots to punch cards to modern touch screen voting machines, though she admits few people use the new machines. The main change has been the increased use of computers in the election process and in the Clerk’s office in general. With computers comes the need to learn new software, and the Clerk’s office just received an upgrade to the latest statewide elections software. With respect to elections, she said one of the main problems is getting people to understand that they have real power – the power of the vote. She also said it is hard to find good election judges.

Carol is a native of Montezuma County, and she graduated from Montezuma County High School. She has been married to a local businessman for 41 years, and they have two children and six grandchildren.
