Precinct Caucus Definition
Precinct caucuses are meetings organized by Colorado’s political parties to begin the process of selecting candidates and policy positions for the 2010 election. Caucuses are held in locations across Colorado and are open to the public.

Caucus Dates
The precinct caucuses will be held on March 16, 2010.

Attending Caucus
Precinct caucuses are open to the public and participation is encouraged by the political parties.

Requirements to Vote in a Precinct Caucus
In order to vote in any precinct caucus of a political party the voter must meet the following requirements:

  • The voter must be a resident of the precinct for at least 30 days;
  • The voter must have registered to vote no later than February 16, 2010;
  • The voter must have been affiliated with the party holding the caucus by January 19, 2010;
  • Except that any voter who turns 18 or becomes a naturalized citizen during the two months prior to the caucus may vote in the caucus even though he or she has not been affiliated with the political party for the required time period.

Precinct Caucus Locations
Precinct caucuses may be held in a public place or a private home that is open to the public during the caucus. The caucus location must be either within the precinct or proximate to the precinct. The county central committee or executive committee of the political party is responsible for determining the time and place of the caucus.

Notice of Caucus
All places established for holding precinct caucuses must be designated by a sign posted no later than March 4, 2010.

Caucus Activities
Caucus attendees may elect officers who will be responsible for organizing political activities within the precinct. Caucus attendees may also elect delegates and alternates to represent the precinct at the political party’s county or district convention.

Obtaining Precinct Information
A voter can determine the precinct that they are currently registered in by visiting the secretary of state website and reviewing their voter registration information.

To obtain information about a caucus in your precinct contact the political party with whom you are affiliated.

County Assembly/Convention
(held between March 26 and April 15, 2010)
The county assembly is convened to designate candidates for the August 10, 2010 state primary election and to select delegates to the congressional district assemblies and the state assembly.

Congressional District Assembly/Convention
(the date is determined by the chairperson of the district committee)
The assembly is convened to designate district level delegates to the national convention. Also, the delegates nominate candidates for Congress, the Colorado General Assembly, the State Board of Education, the Board of Regents, and District Attorneys.

State Assembly/Convention
(held by June 1, 2010)
Candidates are nominated for statewide offices, delegates are elected to the national convention and policy platforms are debated.
